ALL ABOUT DESIGNER BREEDS & TIPS ON HOW TO GROOM THEM !

HISTORY
A designer dog (hybrid dog) is the selective cross between two purebred dogs.  Most of the designer dogs are 50% poodle because poodles tend to be non-shedding (Maltipoo, Cockapoo, Labradoodle, Goldendoodle, Schnoodle, etc.).  Designer dogs are not considered a mutt because they have documented purebred ancestry. So far, two hybrids have made it into the dictionary, the Labradoodle and the Cockapoo.  Both have been around since the 1970's and are very popular designer breeds.

ASSOCIATIONS
If the designer dogs' parents are both purebred, the dog can be registered with the ACHC (American Canine Hybrid Club), an association that has been active for over 35 years and is devoted to hybrid dogs.  In addition to over 200 other types of hybrids, the most popular hybrids registered with the association include; 8,500 Labradoodles, 7,500 Goldendoodles, and 7,500 Puggles.

Currently, the AKC (American Kennel Club) does not recognize any of the newer designer breeds.  There are four requirements the designer dog (hybrid dog) must meet to become registered with the AKC.
    1.  A three generation pedigree- three generations of Labradoodle-to-Labradoodle- producing
    consistant look and temperment.
    2.  There must be 300 of the hybrid type within the U.S. and distributed among 20 states.
    3.  Breed must fullfill a purpose that's not already being met by current pedigrees.
    4.  There must be a national breed club demonstrating interest.

GROOMING
When choosing your designer dog puppy, you should consider the combination charateristics and temperment of both the parents by researching each breed.  Both coat types are considered when grooming, too.  You may not be able to tell the designer dogs full coat until the puppy matures.  As with any puppy, keep them familiar with brushes and combs by brushing the coat regularily.  There are no specific grooming rules when it comes to designer dogs.  Your groomer will help you understand the combination of your designer dogs coat and give advise, but the decision is ultimately up to the owner, so BE CREATIVE!
